TURLOCK – Turlock is rarely the locale where one experiences "a weekend to remember," but to the Chico State softball team, it's the greatest place in California. The Wildcats completed an undefeated Tournament of Champions Sunday with a 2-0 win over Holy Names and an 8-0 blanking of Hawaii-Hilo at the Turlock Sports Complex, giving Head Coach Angel Shamblin's squad a perfect 6-0 record in the tourney. The two victories extended the 'Cats' season-best winning streak to eight straight and improved the Wildcats' overall record to 26-10.
One day after Shamblin became just the third Chico State head coach to rack up 200 career wins, Alli Cook did a little record book re-writing of her own. The senior center fielder piled up four hits on the day, giving Cook 198 for her Wildcat career – the most of any player in the program's history.
The 'Cats collected 16 hits over the two Sunday contests. In addition to Cook's four safeties, Desiree' Gonzalez contributed three hits and Ari Marsh chipped in with two.
Brooke Langeloh won three times
during the Tournament of
Champions, striking out 36 batters
in 22 innings of work. Two batters into Chico State's first game of the day, they had a lead. Taking on Holy Names, the Wildcats went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning when Marsh led off the contest with a double and scored on an infield single by Cook. The 'Cats added to their lead in the top of the fourth when Gonzalez doubled to the left-center field gap, advanced to third on a single by Cyrena Taylor and scored on a wild pitch.
Wildcats' pitcher Brooke Langeloh made the 2-0 lead stand up, allowing just one hit and striking out 11 through the first six innings. Holy Names threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting the potential tying run aboard with nobody out, but Langeloh promptly squashed the Hawks' rally by striking out the next three batters to end it, giving Chico State the 2-0 victory.
In notching her fourth shutout and 10th complete game of the season, Langeloh struck out a career-high 14 batters to earn the win and go to 14-1 on the season. In her three Tournament of Champions games, Langeloh allowed just two runs and six hits in 22 innings of work, striking out 36 batters.
The Wildcats had eight hits in the contest, with Cook going 3-for-4 and Gonzalez posting a pair of safeties.
The 'Cats took on Hawaii-Hilo in the final Tournament of Champions game for both teams. Chico State got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second inning, as Brianna Contreras delivered a two-out single to left to drive in Taylor.
Haley Gilham turned in another masterful performance in the pitcher's circle, allowing just two hits and not allowing a single Hawaii-Hilo runner to advance past second base.
Chico State broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning, and they got plenty of help from the Vulcans as the Wildcats scored seven times. Two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Gonzalez, who cracked a single to left to plate Sarah Galaviz. That was followed by a walk to Taylor, Lorren Sharp being hit by a pitch, a free pass to Gilham and a walk to Contreras – all coming with the bases loaded – to balloon the 'Cats' advantage to 6-0. Megan Bowley delivered the game-ending blow, lining a single to left to chase home Sharp and Gilham to give Chico State the 8-0 victory.
Gilham raised her season record to 11-7 while recording her 12th complete game and second shutout of the year.
In the six Tournament of Champions games, Gilham and Langeloh combined to allow just five earned runs and 18 hits in 41 innings of work (a 0.85 earned run average), striking out 60 hitters and holding the opposing teams to a .125 batting average.
Following Sunday's action, Langeloh was named the Tournament of Champions Top Pitcher and was joined by Gilham on the All-Tournament team.
The Wildcats return to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play next weekend, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills at University Softball Field. The four-game series opens Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader, followed by a Saturday twin bill at 11 a.m.
