The Chico State men's basketball team's two consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) titles and five straight NCAA Championship Tournament berths are unprecedented in the program's history. With his heralded 2015-16 recruiting class, Head Coach Greg Clink has his sights set on taking the program to even greater heights.
Â
Clink and assistants Lucas Gabriel and Justin Blake brought in three more of the state's top preps during the recent National Letter of Intent signing period: Sheldon High School point guard Isaiah Brooks; Jesuit High School power forward/center Malik Duffy; and Loyola High School (Los Angeles) forward Josh Lavergne.
Â
Isaiah Brooks signs his NLI.
"We are excited about the signings of Isaiah, Malik and Josh," Clink said. "They are a great additions to the program. When you consider our two early signees – Calvin Geraci and Spencer LaShells – I believe this has turned out to be one of the strongest recruiting classes we have had."
Â
"Isaiah is an outstanding playmaker and competitor. Josh is going to be an extremely versatile player who can guard multiple positions. Malik is an inside/out threat who can score with his back to the basket and step out and knock down 3's."
Â
That trio combines with early signees Geraci and LaShells to form a formidable five-man class. The four Northern California products all rank among the NorCalPreps.com top 32 prospects. Lavergne is the 14
th-ranked small forward in California and No. 86 in the country according ESPN.com.
Â
Duffy and LaShells are two of only three players rated three-star or higher by NorCal Preps signed to Division II schools.
Â
Duffy is the 18
th-rated player in the Northern California Class of 2016 and No. 6 among power forward/centers. At 6-foot-7, Duffy averaged 16 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while leading the Marauders to a record of 25-6. He was a team captain, First Team All-Delta League and Second Team All-Sacramento Bee selection.
Â
Brooks, a 6-foot point guard, knows Duffy well as they played in the same league. His Sheldon High School team ran the table en route to the Delta League title, going 14-0, and finished 23-6 overall. Brooks ran the point for the Huskies, averaging 15.5 points, 4.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. He led the league in steals and assists.
Â
A team captain, Brooks is NorCal Prep's 30
th-rated player and No. 4 among point guards. He was First Team All-Delta League and Second Team All-Bee.
Â
Here is the ESPN Scouting Report on Brooks: "Brooks is a feisty point guard prospect who plays with great pace. He has good speed, quickness, and he possesses a nice burst off the dribble. He has a knack of making the right basketball play. He excels in transition with the pass or the finish…"
Â
Malik Duffy signs his NLI with the help of his
little brother.
Lavergne, a 6-foot-7 wing, averaged 11 points and 4.4 rebounds per game as the Team MVP at prep powerhouse Loyola High School of Los Angeles. He was a Second Team All-League selection.
Â
Here is the ESPN Scouting Report on Lavergne: "Lavergne has sleeper written all over him. He has that prototypical basketball frame with long arms and big feet. He is a left-hander who possesses solid ball skills and exhibited an improved face-up game…"
Â
With the early signings of Geraci and LaShells, the Lakeshow AAU-to-Chico State pipeline keeps flowing, and Clink couldn't be happier.
Â
The same AAU team led by legendary Bay Area Coach Joe Fuca that sent Clink's Wildcats Rashad Parker, Jordan Barton and Nate Appel in the past, is the summer ball home of Geraci and LaShells. LaShells is the NorCal Preps No. 22 player and No. 7 power/forward center. Geraci is the No. 32 player.
Â
"We are really excited about Calvin and Spencer," Clink said. "Both are talented players and honor students with high character. We couldn't be happier to add them to the Wildcat family."
Â
Clink said that back in December. After seeing their senior-season performances, he might be happier after all. After signing with Chico State, Geraci went on to win the San Francisco Chronicle's North Bay Player of the Year award. He was earned First Team All-Metro. LaShells earned Third Team All-Metro honors after leading a Monte Vista to a 24-8 record and the Northern California Division I title game. LaShells lead the team in scoring and rebounds.
Â
Geraci played all five positions this season, scoring 23.2 points a game and averaging 8.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals.
Â
The 6-foot-3 combo guard played significant varsity minutes all four seasons with the Mustangs and finished his prep career ranked second all-time in Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) scoring, pouring in 877 points. Geraci also set the league record for career 3-pointers made record (113). His 90.48 free-throw percentage this season tied the league record.
