’Cats have scratch fever in anticipation of postseason

Face Cal State L.A. for the second time in four days Tuesday

The Chico State men's basketball team has scratched a lot of things off its bucket list over the past five years.

1. First postseason victory in nearly 20 years.
2. First California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title.
3. First NCAA Championship Tournament victory since 1958.
4. Most wins in 101-season history.
5. First NCAA Championship Tournament West Region title.
6. Consecutive conference titles for the first time since the early 1990s.
7. Four consecutive NCAA Championship Tournament berths.
8. Highest national ranking in the history of the program.

Only a few big objectives remain. The Wildcats have dreams of scribbling through at least three more lines as they enter the 2016 postseason, beginning with a home game versus Cal State L.A. Tuesday at 7 p.m.:

1. Win the program's first CCAA Championship Tournament title.
2. Earn fifth straight NCAA Championship Tournament berth.
3. Go farther in the NCAA Tournament than any Chico State team has.

Corey Silverstrom scored a team-high 18 points
when the Wildcats beat Cal State L.A. 73-55 on
Dec. 31 in Chico.
The Wildcats' will likely be making that fifth straight NCAA Championship Tournament appearance after winning a second consecutive CCAA title last week and finishing the regular season with a stellar record of 22-5. They'll find out for sure on Sunday night during the NCAA Selection Show at 7:30 p.m. Chico State fans are invited to gather upstairs at the Madison Bear Garden for a viewing party beginning at 6:30.

It certainly never hurts to improve one's resume. The Wildcats can accomplish that by making a deep run in the CCAA Championship Tournament. They can guarantee it by bringing home the blue banner and automatic NCAA Championship bid that goes to the winner of the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Chico State has advanced to the conference tournament title game four consecutive seasons, but they have not yet won it.

To have a chance, they'll need to dole out some revenge on a Cal State L.A. team that beat the Wildcats 65-64 Saturday night in Los Angeles. The Golden Eagles are arguably the hottest team in the CCAA, having won seven of their last eight games. But they haven't won in Chico since 2011.

Chico State has won the last five meetings at Acker Gym, including a 73-55 victory on Dec. 31.  Corey Silverstrom led the Wildcats with 18 points that night. He did not play Saturday in L.A. They hope he is ready to go on Tuesday.

Tickets for Tuesday night's rematch are available at the University Box office on the corner of 3rd and Chestnut and via phone at (530) 898-6333. Reserved seats are $9 each.

General Admission tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for seniors (age 60 and over) and visiting students, and $2 for high school age and under.

Chico State student tickets are $2, but the athletic department will be covering the price of admission for the first 500 students who show a valid ID at the University Box Office. Any remaining free student tickets will be brought to Acker Gym the night of the game. After the 500 free student tickets are gone, students will have to purchase a ticket for $2.

If the Wildcats win Tuesday they'll play a CCAA Championship Tournament semifinal game Friday at 12:05 p.m. at the Stockton Arena against Tuesday night's Humboldt State-Cal State Monterey Bay winner.

Saturday's tournament title game is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

Every Chico State postseason game will be broadcast locally on Newstalk 1290-AM KPAY, with the play-by-play simulcast on the Internet through the Wildcat Athletics website. Live Stats and live streaming video will also be available via links in the calendar section and men's basketball schedule page at www.ChicoWildcats.com.
