’Cats hoping to clinch CCAA title Thursday

Wrap up regular season on road Saturday; host playoff game Tuesday

Greg Clink yelled and screamed from the bench. He gave high fives and hugs. He lived and died with every possession.

The year was 1994. Clink was a little-used substitute as a member of the Chico State men's basketball team, which was on its way to a fourth consecutive Northern California Athletic Conference title.

22327He could not have known then that the next time the Wildcats would have a chance to win consecutive conference crowns this late in the season, he would be on the bench once again, high-fiving, hugging, screaming, and living and dying with every possession – this time as the team's 8th-year head coach.

Clink's Wildcats have a chance to claim at least a share of their second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title, and third in five seasons, when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday night at 7:30.

They'll wrap up the regular season at Cal State L.A. Saturday at 7:30.

Chico State, 21-4 overall and 15-3 in conference play, holds a one-game lead over second-place UC San Diego with two to play in the race for the title. If the Wildcats win Friday, they can do no worse than share the title. Two wins would guarantee them the title outright.

The Wildcats, currently ranked No. 13 in the nation, are playing for more than just the conference title. They are currently ranked No. 2 in the West Region – the highest regional ranking in the program's history. Eight teams from the west will receive NCAA Championship Tournament bids during the Division II Championship Selection show on Sunday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m.

Fans can follow the action of both Chico State games locally on Newstalk 1290-AM KPAY, with the play-by-play simulcast on the Internet through the Wildcat Athletics website. Live Stats and live streaming video will also be available for Thursday's game vs. Dominguez Hills, with Live Stats only for Saturday's Cal State L.A. contest.
