Wildcats engineer 1-0 win with Schroeder’s late strike

Chico State completes weekend sweep of CCAA’s top two teams

The engineer was on his horn on the railroad tracks just beyond the bleachers at University Soccer Stadium. His train, rumbling down the tracks, and its incessant whistle, could have been announcing the Chico State men's soccer team's arrival into the California Collegiate Athletic Association's postseason picture just as easily as it did the southbound train.

It blew once as goalkeeper Damion Lewis rolled it to the feet of Alex Fluitt after ripping a corner kick out of the air and starting what proved to be the match-winning counter attack. It blew again as Rajaee DeLane ran onto Fluitt's perfectly-timed pass over the defense from midfield, which matched the run of the speedy DeLane to perfection. After DeLane surveyed the scene alone just outside of the 18-yard box and then hit a pass right on target to Esten Schroeder – ahead of the pack on a full sprint toward the left post-extended – it blew twice more as Schroeder directed his shot inside the near post from eight yards out for the match-winning goal.

The goal – Schroeder's first of the season and the second of his career – came with just 2:23 to play and lifted the Wildcats to a 1-0 win over 20th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, which entered the weekend atop the CCAA standings. It also marked the completion of the Wildcats' weekend sweep of the top two teams in the conference table entering the weekend. They beat second-place Cal State San Bernardino 2-0 Friday.

and assist this weekend.

Chico State improved to 3-4-3 overall and 2-2-2 in the CCAA with its third straight home victory and second this season against a team ranked in the top 20.

Cal Poly Pomona fell to 8-3-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats vaulted five slots up the conference standings into seventh place with their two wins. The top six teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Lewis logged his second straight shutout and fourth of the season, making two saves in the process and cleaning up a number of dangerous balls in the air.

The Chico State defense also came up huge big again, limiting the Broncos to seven shots, which is their second lowest total of the season.

Fluitt came up big once again as well. Back in the starting lineup after dishing out the first two assists of his career in his first collegiate start Friday night, his pass to DeLane was crucial to setting up the winning goal and his third assist on the weekend. He and DeLane caught the defense flat footed. And then Schroeder caught the Broncos with the knockout blow.

The train whistle was blowing right along with them all.

Chico State is back in action next weekend. They host Cal State L.A. Friday afternoon at 4:30 and Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday morning at 11:30.
