Men’s soccer stymied by another slow start

Nuno notches first goal as a Wildcat and dishes out assist

LACEY, Wash. – Omar Nuno notched a goal and assist and Matt Hurlow had a goal and as many shots as the entire Saint Martin's team, but the Chico State men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision Monday against the Saints in Lacey, Wash.

Just as was the case in their season-opening 1-0 loss at 8th-ranked Seattle Pacific on Saturday, a slow start came back to haunt the Wildcats (0-2) on Monday. Saint Martin's (1-1-1) took the lead with a seventh-minute goal and made it 2-0 with another tally in the 16th minute.

Omar Nuno notched his first goal
and assist in a Chico State uniform.
Chico State dominated the run of play after that, out-shooting Saint Martin's 24-5. The Wildcats cut the lead in half with Hurlow's strike from the right side just 2:22 into the second half. Nuno assisted on the goal.

That was the first of seven straight shots taken by the Wildcats to start the half. But Saints goalkeeper Nick Rosato made four saves during that stretch the keep the Saints in the lead.

Then Derrick Gonzales made it 3-1 Saint Martin's when pounced on his own blocked shot and beat Wildcats goalkeeper Andrew Matthews to his right in the 64th minute.

The Wildcats continue to pepper shots at the Saint Martin's goal and finally found the back of the net for the second time on Nuno's low blast into the right side netting in the 84th minute. Jesus Ramos registered the assist.

Chico State managed just one more shot during the final six minutes, with exactly one minute to play, but Ramos shot sailed high.

Hurlow finished with a career-high 11 shots, including six that were on goal. Rajaee DeLane added six (three on goal) and Nuno notched three (two on goal).

The Wildcats will continue their season-opening four-match road swing against Academy of Art at 2 p.m. Thursday and Dominican University of California at 5 p.m. Saturday. Both matches will be at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.

They open the home portion of their 2015 schedule on Friday, Sept. 18, against Holy Names at 7 p.m.
