On a night to celebrate history, ’Cats hope to make some of their own

Two wins would guarantee the Chico State men’s basketball team a CCAA title

The celebration of a century of Chico State men's basketball will culminate at halftime of Saturday night's men's basketball game. The players on the All-Century Team will be honored on what is sure to be a special night.

The 2014-15 Wildcats have an opportunity to make a little history of their own by claiming the second California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title in the history of the program and 20th conference title in all. Chico State enters the final weekend of the regular season in a tie for first place with Cal Poly Pomona and games against Cal State Monterey Bay (Friday) and Cal State East Bay (Saturday) looming. Both games are scheduled to tip at approximately 7:30.

The Wildcats have won 12 of their last 13 games, including seven straight at home, to improve to 19-6 overall and 16-4 in the CCAA.

Two victories would guarantee the Wildcats at least a share of their second CCAA title. Cal Poly Pomona finishes its conference slate with games at Cal State San Bernardino Thursday and Humboldt State Saturday.

If the teams finish tied, they'll share the conference crown, but Chico State will receive the top seed in next week's CCAA Championship Tournament by virtue of its sweep of the regular-season series against the Broncos.

The Wildcats' only other CCAA title since joining the conference in 1998 came in 2011-12. Current 'Cats Jordan Semple, Jordan Barton and Mike Rosaroso were part of that team, which won a program-best 16 conference games and tied the program record with 25 wins overall.

Those three will be honored prior to Saturday's games during "Senior Night" ceremonies. No other senior class in the program's history has been a part of as many wins as these three. That number is at 88 to start the weekend. This is also one of only three senior classes to play in three consecutive NCAA Championship Tournaments and has a chance to be the only one to play in four in a row.

The Wildcats are No. 6 in the current West Region rankings, released Wednesday. The winners of the CCAA, Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Pacific West Conference Championship Tournaments will automatically advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament. The committee will then select five at-large teams to join them.

The CCAA Championship Tournament will take place March 5-7 at the Stockton Arena.

Neither Cal State Monterey Bay or Cal State East Bay will advance to the postseason, but both teams provide a challenging matchup for the Wildcats.

The Otters, 13-13 overall and 9-11 in the CCAA, boast wins against three of the teams headed to Stockton. When Chico State faced the Otters in Seaside in January, the game had the looks of a nail biter in the making. Instead, the Wildcats hammered the hosts, outscoring the Otters 39-20 over the final 17 minutes, to collect a 78-56 win. Semple scored 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and a steal to lead the Wildcats.

Chico State has won seven of the last eight meetings between the teams and leads the all-time series 11-8. But Cal State Monterey Bay beat the Wildcats 73-72 on Alex Fertig's buzzer-beating 3-pointer last season at Acker Gym.

Cal State East Bay, coached by former Wildcats assistant Gus Argenal, has sustained a rash of injuries on the way to a record of 6-20 (4-16 in the CCAA) But the Pioneers will have five players participating in their final collegiate game and desperate to go out with a bang.

The Wildcats won 56-44 earlier this season in Hayward, buoyed by a 30-16 lead at the break. Isaiah Ellis matched his career high with 14 points and Jordan Barton finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Wildcats have won seven in a row and 11 of the last 12 in this series that dates back to the 1960s. Chico State leads the all-time series 48-32.

The man who helped lead the Wildcats to their last conference title, 2011-12 CCAA Player of the Year Jay Flores, will be an assistant coach on the Cal State East Bay bench Saturday night. He'll be honored at halftime as part of the All-Century Team.
