Streak ends at 10

’Cats fall back into tie for first with four to play

ARCATA – The streak is over. But it sure was good while it lasted.

The Chico State men's basketball team led by as many as seven points in the second half but couldn't hold on in a 71-65 loss at Humboldt State Saturday night that snapped its 10-game win streak.

With the loss and Cal Poly Pomona's overtime win at San Francisco State Saturday, the Wildcats and Broncos are now tied for first atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with four to play. Humboldt State is one of four teams tied for third place, three games back.

The Wildcats clinched their sixth consecutive CCAA Championship Tournament appearance with Thursday night's win at Cal State San Bernardino and Sonoma State's loss Friday night.

Jordan Barton scored 13 points off the bench.
Chico State got 18 points from Robert Duncan and 17 points, six rebounds, two steals, two assists and a blocked shot from Arcata's Jordan Semple in his final collegiate game back home. Jordan Barton came off the bench to score 13 for the Wildcats, who fell to 17-6 overall and 14-4 in the CCAA.

Humboldt State won its 10th straight home game, improving to 17-7 overall and 11-7 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats will wrap up the regular season with games at Sonoma State Friday and San Francisco State Saturday before returning home to take on Cal State Monterey Bay Feb. 27 and Cal State East Bay Feb. 28.

Semple assisted on Tyler Harris' layup with 16:28 remaining, giving the Wildcats their largest lead of the night at 38-31.

The lead was 47-41 when Duncan drained a jumper with 12:47 to play, but Humboldt State hit a trio of 3-pointers in the following five minutes to take the lead for good.

Duncan's layup with 26 seconds left cut the lead to two, but Allan Guei hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining and Malik Morgan two more with five ticks left to put the game away.

Despite the loss the weekend was a good one for the Wildcats. With Thursday's win at Cal State San Bernardino they became the first CCAA team to win at least one game on the grueling road trip.
