Davis’ dizzying display does in 17th-ranked Wildcats

Sonoma State sharpshooter scores 30 in 2nd half to outduel Duncan, who scored 25 in second stanza

ROHNERT PARK – They say you can throw the records out the window in a rivalry game. Sonoma State's James Davis was so hot he could have been throwing in 3-pointers through the windows of The Wolves' Den. Davis scored 30 points in the second half of the Seawolves' 61-58 upset win over 17th-ranked Chico State in Rohnert Park Saturday night.

Davis shot 11-of-14 in the second half, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range, as Sonoma State prevented Chico State from matching its best start in school history and breaking the school record for consecutive road wins.

Sonoma State, which also snapped a seven-game losing skid against the rival Wildcats, improved to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Drew Kitchens continued his recent hot streak
with 13 ponts on 5-of-8 shooting. Over the past
three games, the senior is averaging 15.3 points
on 17-of-26 shooting, incuding 8-of-13 from 3-
point range.
Chico State fell to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA despite Robert Duncan's efforts to match Davis shot for shot. Duncan was almost as hot, scoring 25 of his 27 points in the second half on 10-of-15 shooting (5-of-9 from beyond the arc). Duncan also finished with a career-high 12 rebounds.

But he committed seven of Chico State's 22 costly turnovers. Jalen McFerren, who also had a career-night on the glass with 10 rebounds, committed six turnovers. Tanner Giddings and Tyler Harris had three apiece.

Coming off consecutive career-high scoring nights, Drew Kitchens remained hot for the Wildcats, finishing with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting (3-of-6 from 3) and hit back-to-back triples late to keep the Wildcats within striking distance.

After Davis and Duncan traded buckets, Davis delivered his seventh three of the half to give Sonoma State a 51-46 advantage with 4:36 left.

Kitchens hit a three from the top of the key to cut the lead to two, and after Davis scored on a drive, Kitchens hit another three to make it a one-point game with 63 seconds left.

But Duncan fouled Davis shooting a three, and when he made two, the lead was back to three.

Duncan missed the front end of a one-and-one with 24 seconds left before Isaiah Ellis missed a jumper with 20 seconds left. Andy Mitchell and David Ahern combined to hit six straight free throws after that to seal the victory.

The lead changed hands 17 times Saturday night, including 14 in the second half.

A Duncan three put Chico State ahead 36-34 with 12:02 to play before the Seawolves sank threes on five straight possessions – the last three by Davis – to take command, 46-39.

The Wildcats cut the advantage to two behind a nice stint of minutes from Chris Magalotti. On consecutive possessions, the big man scored inside and then grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked it out to McFerren for a three.

But Davis' sensational night proved too much to overcome.

The Wildcats played the game without second-leading scorer and sixth-man Corey Silverstrom, out nursing an injury.

Chico State is back in action on Dec. 31 at home against Cal State L.A. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
