Women’s soccer team slips to fourth in CCAA standings

The Chico State women's soccer team's showdown with UC San Diego Friday night was an equal opportunity match with wildly varying results. Both teams took 15 shots – many of them promising – but the Tritons went home with a 4-0 victory, ending Chico State's 12-match home unbeaten streak.

UC San Diego scored three times in the second half to break the match open. It was the Tritons' final California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match of the season.

Chico State, ranked No. 5 in the West Region entering play, fell to 9-4-2 overall and 5-3-0 in the CCAA.

UC San Diego, No. 7 in the West, is 11-5-1 overall and wrapped up CCAA play with a record of 7-4-1 and 22 points.

Chico State, in second place in the CCAA entering the match, slipped into a tie for fourth with 16 points. With three matches remaining, the Wildcats can still catch the Tritons in the race for one of the top two spots in the standings and the first round CCAA Championship Tournament bye that comes with it.

The Wildcats nearly scored just 1:13 into the match when Nicole Roberts hit a rocket toward the far corner, but Tritons goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky made a diving save. Shelby Lanksbury hit the post in the 21st minute.

Chico State goalkeeper Mackenzie Boulton made a trio of huge saves in the early going as well. But after one of those, a deflection of Maxia Espino's header off a corner, she couldn't get a hand on Espino's rebounded try in the mouth of the goal that put the Tritons ahead to stay in the 38th minute.

Jordan McNutt volleyed home a corner just 39 seconds into the second half and the Tritons were off to the races.

Chico State finished with a 9-7 edge in corner kicks, but it was the Tritons who converted two.

Pooja Patel and Roberts both had promising tries parried away over the next few minutes before McNutt assisted on Mary Reilly's rocket to the far corner that made it 3-0.

Chico State will try to get back on track Sunday against Cal State San Marcos Sunday at 2 p.m.
