’Cats get buckets, fans get burgers

Semple scores 19 to break 1,000-point barrier

The Chico State men's basketball team christened the 2014-15 home campaign with a convincing win, a barrier-breaking performance and a whole lot of Carl's Jr. Western Bacon Double Cheeseburgers for its fans.

The 12th-ranked Wildcats beat William Jessup 97-64 to improve to 3-0 on the season on a night in which Jordan Semple became the 15th player in the program's history to reach 1,000 career points.

Robert Duncan set a new career-high in scoring for the 3rd straight game.
Semple soared in for a layup, assisted by Mike Rosaroso, stretching the Wildcats' lead to 37-17. It gave him 10 points on the night and 1,000 in his career and elicited a stirring salute from the fans.

After that the only real drama remaining was weather the Wildcats would reach the 90-point plateau and provide everyone in attendance bacon-topped cheeseburger booty.

Everyone on the team pitched in at least two points to get there, led by Robert Duncan's 21. The sophomore set a new career high in points for the third straight game. He shot 8-of-10 and the Wildcats were a sizzling 67 percent from the floor. They entered the season atop the NCAA Division II rankings in field-goal percentage and actually raised that number to 63 percent for the season.

Semple turned in another stat-stuffing performance with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, eight rebounds, three blocked shots, two steals and an assist. Trevor Priest poured in a career-high 12 points and Isaiah Ellis scored a dozen as well. Rosaroso and Tyler Harris had 10 points apiece with Rosaroso adding a career-best seven rebounds, five assists and two steals and Harris delivering seven dimes.

After William Jessup (8-2) opened the scoring with a 3-pointer the Wildcats went on a 16-1 run and led by double-figures from that point on.

Harris' 3-pointer gave Chico State its largest lead of the first half, 50-27, with 1:39 to go before intermission.

A Duncan steal, McFerren's dime and Priest's dunk made it 87-56 with 6:06 to play. The margin grew as wide as 36.
