ROHNERT PARK – The Chico State men's basketball team began its 100
th season by doing something that none of the 99 teams before it had. The Wildcats shot a school-record 73.8 percent on the way to a 104-62 win against Pacific Union in the opening game of the Sonoma State Ron Logsdon Classic.
Robert Duncan scored a career-high 13 points in his first collegiate start.The 19
th-ranked Wildcats reached the century mark for the first time since Jan. 20, 2007 and for the first time in regulation since Dec. 7, 2005 behind a well-balanced scoring attack. All 10 players who suited up scored six points or more while playing at least 15 minutes.
Junior center Christopher Magalotti led the Wildcats with a career-high 15 points on 7-for-7 shooting, matching Roderick Hawkins for the best single-game shooting performance in the Greg Clink era. Redshirt freshman Isaiah Ellis made 7-of-8 shots and finished with 14 points. Robert Duncan – a sophomore making his first collegiate start – and Mike Rosaroso scored 13 points apiece, while Jordan Semple scored 11.
Tanner Giddings, Trevor Priest, Tyler Harris and Corey Silverstrom scored eight points apiece and true freshman Jalen McFerren made a solid first impression, finishing with six points, six rebounds and five assists.
The Wildcats cashed in on 26-of-34 shots in the first half while building a 58-26 lead and finished 45-for-61. They hit 8-of-15 from beyond the arc. Rosaroso was 3-for-5, Harris 2-for-3, Silverstrom 2-for-4 and Semple 1-for-1.
Chico State led by as many as 49 (98-49 with 3:39 to play).
The Wildcats enjoyed a 39-19 edge on the glass, including 11-10 on the offensive end. Despite missing only 16 shots they finished with 17 second-chance points.
Chico State (1-0) improved to 15-0 against Division III or NAIA teams under Clink's watch, including 4-0 against Pacific Union, which fell to 0-2 on the season.
Redshirt freshman Isaiah Ellis was
7-for-8 and scored 14 points in his
first collegiate contest.The Wildcats are certain to get a tougher test tomorrow night when they face Alaska Anchorage, led by Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Travis Thompson, at 5:30 in an important in-region showdown. The Seawolves were picked to finish second in the GNAC preseason coaches' poll.
Alaska Anchorage lost two tight games to soon-to-be GNAC member Concordia (Ore.) to open the season. The Seawolves will take on Sonoma State Friday night at 7:30.
The Wildcats have won 11 of their last 12 in-region games away from home.
