Pomona one-ups 'Cats in comeback win

Ajeakwa just second player to score against 16th-ranked Broncos this season

The Chico State men's soccer team became just the second team to net a goal against 16th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona this season when Akwafei Ajeakwa intercepted a pass a hit a gorgeous 20-year chip shot into the upper-V at the far post in the 20th minute. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Cal Poly Pomona one-upped them in the second stanza, becoming the first team to score twice against the Wildcats to rally for a 2-1 win Friday at University Soccer Stadium.

In the process, the once 5th-ranked Wildcats dropped their third straight one-goal decision to fall to 5-3-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal Poly Pomona improved to 8-0-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the CCAA.

Chico State had a terrific first half, highlighted by Ajeakwa's third goal of the season and goalkeeper Luke Dennison's denial of a penalty kick.

It was the second time this season that the true freshman keeper cleared a penalty kick off the line and it definitely gave the Wildcats a lift. Less than three minutes later, Ajeakwa cut off a pass in the middle of the pitch about 30 yards out. He took a couple of touches and then made the Broncos goalkeeper pay for sneaking out a bit to cut off his angle. As Ajeakwa slid left across the top of the box he lofted a quick shot that angled right and nestled high into the net in the far-right corner.

The Wildcats went to the half leading 1-0, but the lead was gone less than three minutes into the second half.

Dennison made his fifth save of the day on Daniel Asor's early second-half try, leading to a corner kick. The Broncos took advantage when Alexander Turkson flicked on Mathew Perez's corner with a header and the ball deflected off the back of Wildcats defender Mike Janjigian and into the back of the net for an own goal.

Asor assisted on the game-winning goal in the 60th minute, putting Christian Gonzalez Diaz through with a back-heeled flick. Diaz dribbled around Dennison near the right post and then sent a shot into the left corner for his seventh strike of the season.

The Wildcats best chance to tie it came in the 89th minute, but Jeff Pereira's twisting attempt to redirect a ball in the box went just wide.

Chico State will attempt to snap its first three-match losing streak since 2009 Sunday against UC San Diego at 11:30 a.m. at University Soccer Stadium.
