Box Score History surrounded the hardwood at Acker Gym Friday night. Chico State Head Coach Greg Clink faced his good friend and former understudy Gus Argenal for the first time. A slew of recently graduated Wildcats were in the stands. And their former teammate, Jay Flores, assisted Argenal, in his first season at the helm at Cal State East Bay.
History was made as well. Sean Park became the 13th Wildcat to score 1,000 career points on his way to a career-high 31. Jordan Semple became the 12th Chico State player to eclipse 500 rebounds while matching his career high with 14. And Chico State extended its home winning streak to a record 17 games in an 83-75 win.
Chico State improved to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The 11-2 start matches the best in program history and marks the first time it's happened since 1942-43.
The Wildcats trailed by two with 6:16 remaining before Park's 10 points sparked a 22-6 push that proved the difference.
After Park tied the game with a pair of free throws he collected one of his career-high four steals on the other end. That led to Semple's setup of Jordan Barton for a two-handed slam that brought the fans to their feet and gave Chico State the lead for keeps.
Park scored the game's next four points and then Semple took a baseline feed from Rashad Parker and ripped it home for a 71-63 lead with 3:34 left.
Much of the game was contested at the free throw line. Chico State made 35-of-53 foul shots (four off the school record for made free throws in a game) and Cal State East Bay 24-of-29.
The Wildcats were only 10-of-24 from the line in the first half, and thus, led just 33-30 at the break. But they redeemed themselves in the second stanza, burying 25-of-29 from the stripe.
Semple and Amir Carraway compiled double-doubles for the Wildcats. Semple finished with 18 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals before fouling out in 29 minutes. Carraway racked up 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Wildcats outrebounded Cal State East Bay 46-32.
Chico State hosts Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night at 7:30. The Otters are coached by another former Wildcats assistant, Rob Bishop.Â
GAME NOTES – Damario Sims, also part of the 1,000-point club, was in the stands, along with fellow former Wildcats Zach Graves, Jake Lovisolo, Spencer Moyer, Jon Baird, and Jason Conrad, among others…Rashad Parker passed Baird to take the lead in Chico State career free-throw percentage by hitting 6-of-6. He's now at 85 percent (123-for-125) – percentage points ahead of Baird, who made 121 of 123 in his career.
