Carl’s Jr. Mac Martin Invitational features meaty field

Teams bring a combined 15-2 record to tournament

Where's the beef? At the Carl's Jr. Mac Martin Invitational this weekend as the annual Chico State men's basketball tournament features its meatiest field in recent memory.

The 2-1 Wildcats host unbeaten Dominican University of California (6-0) Friday at 7:30 and 9th-ranked Seattle Pacific (6-1) Saturday at 7:30. San Francisco State (1-0), which along with Dominican received votes in this week's Top 25 Coaches Poll, starts the action each day with a 5:30 affair. The Gators take on Seattle Pacific Friday and Dominican Saturday.

Five All-Tournament selections from the past two seasons will return to the site of their successes. Chico State's Amir Carraway was the 2011 Mac Martin Most Valuable Player. San Francisco State's William Overton Jr. and Nefi Perdomo produces All-Tournament perforamnces in 2011, while Calvin Otiono did the same in 2012. Seattle Pacific point guard David Downs was also a 2012 All-Tournament selection.

This marks Chico State's last opportunity to build its NCAA Championship Tournament resume against non-conference foes. The Wildcats beat Holy Names of the Pacific West Conference to start the season and face another PacWest foe in Dominican. Seattle Pacific is the Wildcats' lone Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponent during the regular season.

Saturday's game also gives the Wildcats a chance at redemption following a disappointing 79-47 loss to the Falcons in the finale of last season's Carl's Jr. Mac Martin Invitational.

But they won't be looking past Dominican. The Penguins have improved in each of the past three seasons, going from four wins in 2010-11 to 11 in 2011-12 and then to 16 last season. And they look well on their way to setting a new standard since joining the NCAA in 2009-10.

Chico State is 8-0 all-time against Dominican and 2-8 in its history against Seattle Pacific.
