Four good minutes not enough for Wildcats

Gators gouge Wildcats to snap five-game home court win streak

The University of Arkansas used to call its brand of basketball 40 minutes of hell. The Chico State men’s basketball team gave visiting San Francisco State four minutes of hell Friday night. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the other 36 were a hell of a good time for San Francisco State in the Gators’ 83-70 win at Acker Gym.

Chico State trailed 35-18 following Winston Demmin’s alley-oop dunk with 3:15 remaining in the first half. But they scored 15 of the game’s next 17 points, highlighted by Jay Flores’ steal and 30-foot buzzer beater to end the half, and punctuated by Sean Park’s jumper with 19:13 to play that trimmed the lead to 37-33.

San Francisco State’s lead was back in double figures less than two minutes later, however, and the

Gators cruised on to victory in a battle for fifth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). San Francisco State, which scored five seconds in and led the entire way, got 22 points from Nefi Perdomo and 20 from Marquel Hoskins. Demmin chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds as the Gators improved to 9-6 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA.

Jay Flores and Terence Pellum scored 19 points apiece for Chico State, which saw its five-game home court winning streak snapped. The Wildcats have lost three straight five of their last seven games to fall to 9-6 overall and 5-6 in the CCAA. Roderick Hawkins finished with 15 points and Sean Park 14.

Flores dished out seven assists to tie Tony Prescott (1992-94) for 10th on Chico State’s career assists list with 202.
