CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State men’s basketball team made the necessary defensive adjustments in the second half, they just couldn’t muster enough offense to get back into the game. The Wildcats shot 30 percent on the night, including 25 percent in the second half, and fell to visiting Cal State L.A. 67-49 Saturday night at Acker Gym.
Cal State L.A., which shot 67 percent in the first half to race to a 42-27 lead, improved to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with the win. Chico State fell to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in the CCAA.
The Wildcats held Chris Fields, the CCAA’s second-leading scorer (behind the Wildcats’ Andy Bocian) scoreless in the second half and allowed the Golden Eagles to score just nine points during the first 12 minutes of the second half. However, they failed to make up any ground because of their own offensive troubles. The Wildcats missed nine of their first 11 shots of the second half, so despite limiting the Cal State L.A. offense, their deficit was still 51-36 midway through the second half.
Bocian finished with a game-high 15 points for the Wildcats, while Roderick Hawkins scored a career-high 14 points and matched Bocian with a team-high six rebounds. Nick Lonnegren finished with eight points, while Zach Graves and Justin Argenal logged three steals apiece.
Artis Gant paced Cal State L.A. with 13 points. Chris Mark finished with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Tyler Polo limited Bocian on the defense end, while scoring 11 points on offense. Christofer Hart added 10 points and a game-high five assists.
