Rockin' Robbins helps lift baseball team to sweep

CHICO, Calif. – Mike Robbins set the tone on the mound, firing six innings of two-hit shutout baseball in the Wildcats’ 10-1 victory over Cal Poly Pomona to open a doubleheader sweep Saturday. Jimmy Dodos, Josh Meagher, Shane Farmer, and Kyle Eveland set the tone at the plate, finishing the afternoon with four hits apiece. Meagher banged out three hits and scored three times in Chico State’s 7-5 win in the nightcap.

The Wildcats, who entered the weekend ranked No. 16 in the nation, improved to 26-9 overall and 15-7 in the CCAA with their fifth straight win and 13th in the last 15 games. They still trail first-place Sonoma State by four-and-a-half games with 13 to go. But they now trail second-place Cal State Stanislaus by just a game-and-a-half and third-place UC San Diego by a half game. They’ve also put important distance between themselves and fifth-place Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles are three games behind Chico State for fourth place and a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Cal Poly Pomona fell to 7-23 overall and 4-13 in the CCAA with the losses.

Robbins (7-1) allowed a single in the third and a single in the fifth. He struck out five and walked only one and has now tossed 13 consecutive scoreless frames. Kyle Woodruff allowed one run on two hits in three innings of work to nail down the victory and earn his first save.

Dodos, Ringer, and Matt Bitker drove in two runs apiece to lead Chico State’s offense in the game.

Brandan King (1-2) took the loss for Cal Poly Pomona, surrendering 10 runs on 11 hits in five-plus innings of work.

Andrew Pluta was one out away from recording his fifth consecutive complete game for the Wildcats in the nightcap, but Jr. Garcia was called in with the tying run on first and struck out Joshua Potter to end the game. Pluta improved to 7-2 on the season with the win, while Garcia earned his second save of the season.

Cal Poly Pomona starter Casey Yokubaitis (1-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed six runs on 11 hits in four-plus innings.

Kevin Seaver and Shane Farmer both notched two hits and two RBI to help spark Chico State’s offense. Seaver, who earned his first two starts of the season, finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, a double, a sacrifice bunt, and was hit by a pitch.

The series concludes with a single game Sunday at noon.
