ARCATA - The Chico State softball team ended its season with two losses to two-time CCAA Champion, Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks, who are currently ranked No. 6 in the country, shut out the Wildcats twice, 5-0 and 8-0.
The Wildcats showed improvement in the 2008 season, winning ten more games than they did the previous season, which was head coach Jamie Brown’s first year of rebuilding the program. Chico State ends the season at 25-28 overall, 13-19 in CCAA play.
After taking the second game from the Lumberjacks on Friday, behind fantastic pitching by freshman Lauren Walker, HSU came out swinging on Saturday.
The Lumberjacks (47-15, 24-8) jumped on starter Krystal Shaw for four runs in the second inning and cruised to the 5-0 victory behind Lizzy Prescott’s two hitter. Kaitlyn Azevedo singled and Christine Johnson doubled for the Wildcats. Laura Stokes pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on six hits.
In game two, HSU knocked starter Walker out of the game with a six-run third inning and scored solo runs in the fourth and fifth for an 8-run rule decision after five inning. Stokes and Shaw also pitched in the game.
Prescott (38-8) was impressive again, allowing just three hits while striking out four. Gwen Cox, Allison Smith, and Christine Johnson each recorded singled for Chico State.
