ARCATA – Chico State’s Chelsea Lundberg hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and pitcher Lauren Walker was perfect over the final six innings as the Wildcats won the second game of a softball doubleheader against first-place Humboldt State. Lundberg also homered in the opening game for the Wildcats’ only hit and run in a 5-1 loss.
Lundberg now has 16 career home runs in her three seasons with the Wildcats, which puts her into a tie for first place on Chico State's all-time career list. She ties J.R. Roberts who had 16 four-baggers in her four-year career (1996-99).
Chico State now stands at 25-26 overall, 13-17 in CCAA play. Humboldt State remains at the top of the CCAA standings, but drops to 45-15 overall, 22-8 in conference.
In the late game, the Wildcats scored a run in the first inning when Allison Smith drove in Megan Bera with a two-out double, but Humboldt State answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame and the game remained tied until Lundberg’s heroics in the sixth. It was just the fourth time this season the Lumberjack’s had been beaten on their home field.
Walker (W, 10-10) had her best game of the season against the CCAA’s second-best hitting team. Entering the game with a .306 team batting average, Walker retired the Lumberjacks in order every inning over the final six frames. She allowed just two hits in the first inning and struck out just one batter in the game, relying on solid defensive play from her team behind her, which recorded 12 fly outs and eight ground outs.
In the early game, Humboldt State recorded an unearned run in the first, added two more in the fifth and another pair in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead before Lundberg’s one-out home run in the top of the seventh, breaking up Lizzy Prescott’s (36-8) no-hitter and shut out attempt with one swing.
Krystal Shaw (12-13) took the loss, allowing five runs – four earned – on runs six hits. She struck out one and walked four.
The Wildcats wrap up the regular season with another doubleheader against the Lumberjacks on Saturday.
