SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Freshman Kateleyn Azevedo smacked a two-run double and solo home run to help lead the Chico State softball team to a 6-4 win in the opener, but the Wildcats could not overcome four Coyote home runs in the nightcap, losing 8-4, and were forced to settle for a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon.
Nickie Jarrett went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the opener, while Christine Johnson was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Cooper Jackson also drove in a run. Krystal Shaw (12-12) went the route to collect the victory. She allowed four runs, none of which were earned no nine hits.
The Wildcats led 3-1 early in the second game, but San Bernardino scored four times in the fourth and three more times in the fifth to take control of the game. Jackson finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in, and Megan Bera also notched a pair of hits to lead the Chico State offense. Laura Stokes pitched well in relief, retiring all four of the batters she faced, three via strikeout.
Chico State is now 24-25 overall and 12-16 in the CCAA heading into its final weekend of play next Friday and Saturday at Humboldt State.
