SAN BERNARDINO – The Chico State softball team lost a heartbreaker in game one and never recovered in the nightcap as the Wildcats were swept by Cal State San Bernardino by scores of 3-2 and 9-1 Friday afternoon at Coyote Softball Park. The Wildcats entered the day with hopes of moving right into the thick of the CCAA Championship Tournament race, but instead likely saw their postseason hopes come to an end.
Chico State fell to 23-24 overall and 11-15 in the CCAA with the losses. Cal State San Bernardino improved to 28-25-1 overall and 13-10 in the CCAA. The teams will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
Chico took an early 2-0 lead in game one thanks to a double by center fielder Megan Bera, an RBI-triple off the bat of Chelsea Lundberg, and Allison Smith’s sacrifice fly. The score remained 2-0 until San Bernardino’s Nicole Camarena drilled a two-run home run to center, to knot the score in the fourth.
The Coyotes scored the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh when the Wildcats were unable to turn a double-play on Jordan Dahl’s ground ball with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
Cassidy Lee held Chico State scoreless in six innings of relief to pick up her fifth win for the Coyotes. Chico’s Krystal Shaw (11-12) took the loss in a complete-game effort. She allowed three runs on six hits in six-plus innings. She struck out one and walked four. Lundberg finished with a pair of hits to lead the Wildcats offense.
Chico State looked as if it might recover in the nightcap when Lundberg reached on an infield single and eventually came around to score on Kaitlyn Azevedo’s bases-loaded walk to put the Wildcats up 1-0. However, San Bernardino responded with a run in the bottom of the inning and then tacked on another in the second, four in the third, two in the fourth, and another in the fifth.
Wildcats starting pitcher Lauren Walker (9-9) took the loss, allowing two runs in one-plus innings of work. Nickie Jarrett went 2-for-2 to spark the Chico State offense.
