CHICO - The Chico State softball team allowed Cal State Stanislaus to score early in both games of a CCAA doubleheader today at University Field and wasn’t able to overcome the deficits, losing by scores of 6-3 and 4-0.
The losses drop the Wildcats to 9-13 overall, 4-8 in the CCAA. Cal State Stanislaus stands at 7-13 overall, 4-6 in conference.
In the opener, The Warriors scored two first inning runs, stringing together three-straight two-outs hits, including a two-run double by Alyssa Guzman.
The Wildcats cut the lead in half in the second inning with a two-out walk and an RBI-double by Kathy Domanycic, who later left the game with a broken hand after putting a tag on an attempted steal of home to end Stanislaus’ fourth inning.
The Warriors added two more in the fifth on Meghan Franksen’s third home run of the year and a solo unearned run in the third to take a 5-1 lead.
Megan Bera led off the Wildcat sixth with her first homer of the year, a blast to left field, but the Warriors battled for one more run in the top of the seventh on Fraksen’s third hit of the game.
Chico rallied in the final frame for a run on two doubles by Rebecca Johnson and Gwen Cox, but Warrior pitcher Stacey Hains came on to record the final out and the save.
Krystal Shaw (L, 4-7) gave up five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work. Laura Stokes came on for the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three.
Jessica Gaumnitz (W, 4-4) evened her record with the win, surrendering three runs on five hits. She struck out three and walked three.
In the late game, Stanislaus outhit Chico by just one, 7-6, but the Wildcats were unable to push a run across.
The Warriors scored single runs in the second and fifth innings. Franksen drove in the run in the fifth with a triple, and ended the day 6-for-8 day at the plate.
Jennifer Arnold (W, 3-6) allowed two hits apiece in the first and third innings, but didn’t give any free passes, allowing no walks and striking out one in her complete-game effort.
Bera had three of the Wildcats’ six total hits and Chelsea Lundberg added two. Chico State left seven runners on base, three in scoring position.
Lauren Walker (L, 5-4) gave up three runs on six hits, while striking out five and walking four. Stokes pitched the final three outs, giving up one unearned run of her own.
The same two teams will be back in action on Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
