TURLOCK, Calif. – Chico State freshman hurler Pete Mickartz pitched well enough to improve to 6-0 in his sixth start of the season. Instead, his offensive teammates stranded nine runners on base and Mickartz allowed Kyle Loretelli’s walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth as Cal State Stanislaus beat the Wildcats 3-2 Friday in Turlock.
After giving up two runs in the first inning, Mickartz held the host Warriors scoreless for seven frames in a row. He scattered seven hits in eight innings of work while striking out a season-high nine batters. Chico State, ranked No. 16 in the nation, fell to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). They saw their 2008 road record fall to 1-3.
Cal State Stanislaus, ranked No. 23 in the nation, improved to 15-4 overall and 8-1 in the CCAA.
Cal State Stanislaus got its only two runs in the first inning. Dante Palacios singled to lead off the game and eventually scored on David Contreras’ ground ball. Dennis Wolfe followed with a solo home run to make it 2-0.
Shane Farmer led off the seventh with a single to help set up the Wildcats’ first run of the game. He moved to second base on a balk, to third in Kyle Eveland’s base hit, and scored on Jimmy Dodos’ ground ball.
Josh Meagher singled home pinch runner Travis DeCoito with one out in the eighth to tie the game 2-2. Bret Ringer led off the inning with a base hit. DeCoito came on as a pinch runner and stole second base to get into position to tie the game on Meagher’s base hit.
