Wildcats host Toros tonight in first round of CCAA Championship Tournament

The 2007-08 CCAA champion Chico State women's basketball team hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills tonight at 7 p.m. in Acker Gym in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Basketball Championship tournament. Tickets can be purchased at the door, beginning at 5:30. Three other first round games will be taking place tonight with the winners meeting this weekend in San Bernardino. The winner of the CCAA tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional, scheduled for March 14-17.

The Wildcats, 24-5 on the year, defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills last Friday in the final game of the regular season by a 67-50 margin, sweeping the season series between the two clubs. A victory tonight would give the Wildcats 25 wins for just the second time in the program's history. The 2005-06 Wildcats won 28 games. Cal State Dominguez Hills enters tonight's contest with a record of 13-14 overall.

Teams will be re-seeded for the tournament semifinals. So if Chico State wins Tuesday, the Wildcats will play either No. 4 Sonoma State, No. 5 Humboldt State, No. 6 San Francisco State, or No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona Friday at 12:30 or 3 p.m.

Chico State moved up two spots to No. 18 in the nation in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll released Tuesday. No other CCAA school are among the top 25. However, Chico State's West Region rivals Seattle Pacific (No. 2) and Alaska Anchorage (No. 7) are. The Wildcats have now ranked among the nation's top 25 in 56 consecutive polls dating back to Jan. 19, 2005.
