TURLOCK - The Chico State softball team was held scoreless in two scheduled games of pool play at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock. The Wildcats lost to Seattle University 5-0 and Central Washington 7-0. After pool play, the tournament is broken up into three brackets. Chico State takes on Chaminade University at 9 a.m. on Sunday in the Bronze Bracket.
Against Seattle, Chico State recorded two hits. Megan Bera singled in the fourth and Cooper Jackson opened the sixth inning with a single, but was wiped off the base by a double play ball by the next batter.
Winning pitcher Erin Martin (13-1) faced just one batter over the minimum, striking out five.
Krystal Shaw (L,9-10) threw three innings, allowing all five runs on seven hits. She struck out three and walked two. Laura Stokes pitched the final four innings, allowing three hits and recording one strikeout.
Seattle University scored a solo run in the first and exploded for four runs in the fourth before an out was recorded, highlighted by a three-run homer by designated player Lauren Berin.
Central Washington got on the board early, helped by Chico State errors. CWU scored two unearned runs in the second, two more unearned runs in the third, a solo run in the fourth and two runs on a homer in the fifth for the 7-0 win.
Lauren Walker (L, 6-8) took the loss, giving up seven runs, three earned, on six hits in five innings of work. Stokes pitched the final inning allowing no hits and striking out one.
Chico had four hits in the game, one a piece by Chelsea Lundberg, Allison Smith, Rebecca Johnson, and Jackson.
