TURLOCK - The Chico State softball team lost its opening game at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock to Western Oregon, 2-1, but rebounded to beat Western Washington 4-3 in the team’s second game of the day. Pool play continues on Saturday, with the Wildcats facing Seattle University at 9:15 and Central Washington at 11:30.
Chico State (16-19) was able to hold off Western Washington(15-17) despite being outhit 13-7 in the game. WWU stranded 12 runners on base, seven in scoring position, and committed four errors in the game leading to two of the Wildcats’ runs.
The Wildcats scored first, stringing together three straight hits, a single by Megan Bera, a double by Chelsea Lundberg, and a RBI single by Nickie Jarrett.
Western Washington took the lead with two runs, one earned, in the third inning before Chico tied it back up with a solo unearned run the fifth.
The Vikings answered back with a run in the top of the sixth on a RBI double by Meghan Flem. But not to be denied, Chico led off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back hits, a double by Rebecca Johnson and a RBI single by Alison Smith to tie the game. Smith advanced to second on Kaitlyn Azevedo’s walk and came in to score the winning run on an error by the WWU shortstop.
Krystal Shaw came on to pitch the seventh and pick up her first save of the season. Laura Stokes (W, 1-3) recorded her first win of the season, coming on in relief of starter Lauren Walker, pitching just two-thirds of an inning in the sixth.
In the Wildcats first game Krystal Shaw (L, 9-9) gave up two runs on three hits in the second inning, but settled down to hold Western Oregon (13-9) scoreless the remainder of the game. She gave up seven hits, one walk, and recorded three strikeouts in her six innings of work.
Chico State struggled offensively putting up just three hits in the first six innings. Down 2-0, the Wildcats were able to push across a run in the top of the seventh, thanks back-to-back hits by Christine Johnson and Gwen Cox and an error by the Wolves. Cox had two of the Wildcats’ five hits.
Katie Fleer (W 7-2) allowed just one unearned run on five hits and struck out 15. Amanda Fleer and Whitney Lee were both 2-for-3 at the plate.
