CHICO, Calif. ¬– The Chico State baseball team capped a dominant series with another dominant win Saturday, dispatching of visiting Cal State Monterey Bay 14-0 to complete a four-game series sweep. Catcher Cody Dee became just the third player in Chico State history to hit for the cycle in the process. He hit a solo homer, his seventh of the season, to lead off the second. He singled to center field in the third. He tripled off the top of the wall in center field in the sixth. And he doubled to right field in the eighth. Dee joins Robby Poole (3/1/2002) and Greg Finazzo (4/29/07) in that illustrious club.
The Wildcats outscored the visiting Otters 57-10 over the four games and pounded out 68 hits in the process. They batted .447 as a team and slugged .671 thanks to 24 extra-base hits. The 57 runs are the most Chico State has scored in a four-game series since the Wildcats scored 58 in a four-game sweep of Cal State L.A. in 2002.
Chico State, which entered the series ranked No. 19 in the nation, has now won eight in a row to improve to 21-7 overall and 10-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Wildcats will now turn their attention to next weekend’s four-game series against first-place Sonoma State, which is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation. Chico State will host the first two games of the series Friday night at 6 p.m. and Saturday at noon. Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 7-22 overall and 5-15 in the CCAA.
Kyle Gibson (1-1) collected the win in his first start of the season for the Wildcats. He was dominant, allowing just two hits and striking out six in five innings of work. The senior hurler retired the last 10 batters he faced. Kyle Woodruff, Ivan Gonzalez, and Joel Garcia combined on four shutout innings of relief to preserve the shutout.
Dee finished 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI, while increasing his hitting streak to nine games. Jimmy Dodos, Phil Boscarino, Shane Farmer, Travis DeCoito, and Nick Liedel chipped in two hits apiece. Kyle Eveland led the team with three RBI and finished 1-for-2. Kevin Seaver added his first home run of the season.
Matt DeJesus went 2-for-3 to lead the Otters offense. CSU Monterey Bay starter Charles Grosser (1-4) took the loss in his first start of the season, surrendering seven earned runs on nine hits in two innings of work.
