CHICO – The Chico State softball team sweep a doubleheader for the first time this season, using a big inning in each game, to come out ahead of Cal State Dominguez Hills 5-1 and 7-1. In the opening game it was a five-run sixth inning that broke the game open. In the late game, the Wildcats put five runs on the board in the fifth.
The wins gave Chico State a 3-1 win of the season series, and bumped the Wildcats to 15-18 overall, 8-12 in CCAA play. Cal State Dominguez Hills drops to 16-14 overall, 10-8 in conference.
In the first game, Krystal Shaw (W 9-8) gave up a run on three hits in the top of the first and got out of the inning with the bases loaded. She settled down after that, allowing just two hits through the final six innings. Shaw struck out four and walked four in the victory.
Chico State took the lead in the fourth on a two-out, two-run double by designated hitter Kaitlyn Azevedo to push across two unearned runs, but the Wildcats did even more damage in the fifth.
Christine Johnson led off the inning with a hit and was sacrificed to second. The Wildcats’ next five batters all reached base, four with hits and one as a hit batter. Chelsea Lundberg drove in the first run, Rebecca Johnson doubled in two runs and Allison Smith singled to scored drive in another. Azevedo scored the final run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield for her third RBI of the game.
The second game looked similar with the Toros scoring first in the top of the fifth on a double by Jodi Nakawatase and a RBI single by pitcher Regina Farfan.
In the bottom of the sixth, Chico State jumped on reliever Kristin Tanaka (L, 5-2) to score five runs on five hits in just one-third of an inning. Smith drove in two runs with a double, Azevedo plated two more with a single to left to drive in five runs in the doubleheader and Cooper Jackson knocked in the final run with a double.
Lauren Walker (W, 6-7) picked up the win, allowing one run on seven hits in the complete game. She struck out four, walked one and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third with a come-backer to the pitching rubber for the final out.
The Wildcats head to the Stanislaus Tournament of Champions in Turlock next weekend.
