CHICO – The hits and runs just keep on coming for the Chico State baseball team against CSU Monterey Bay. The Wildcats scored 25 runs in the two games today, sweeping the doubleheader by scores of 17-7 and 8-1. Coupled with the Wildcats 18-run, 24-hit performance on Friday night, the Wildcats have scored 43 runs and 47 hits in three games and the series isn’t even over.
Chico (20-7, 9-5 CCAA) sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning to collect five hits and seven runs, three unearned. Ringer, who had three doubles last night, doubled in a run to start the scoring barrage. Josh Meagher followed it up with a two-run double of his own and Matt Bitker plated a run with a hit through the left side.
Nick Victor highlight a six-run second inning with a grand slam to left field for his third home run of the season. Phil Boscarino drove in the final run of the inning for a 13-0 lead.
Wildcat starter Mike Robbins (W, 5-1) recorded the win, but struggled in the fifth, allowing five runs on four hits, including a solo home run by Jacob Flores. For the game he pitched five innings, surrendering six runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Jr. Garcia picked up his first save of the season, giving up one run on four hits in the final four innings.
Boscarino had three hits in the game, while Jimmy Dodos, Cody Dee, Meagher and Bitker each had a pair.
In the late game, starting pitcher Andrew Pluta picked up his third-straight complete-game victory. He allowed a solo home run in the second to Matt DeJesus to tie the game at 1-1, but was not threatened after that. Just two runners advanced into scoring position in the final five innings. Pluta scattered six hits, while striking out three and walking three.
Chico State broke open the 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth, thanks to a RBI double by Dee and a two-run double by Shane Farmer. The Wildcats added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ringer had a two-run single in the inning and Kyle Eveland drove in a run with a double.
Farmer, Ringer and Meagher each had two of the Wildcats’ eight hits in the game.
Next up for the Chico State is a four-game series with rival Sonoma State. The series will be split between the two locations with a Friday game in Chico at 6:00 and a Saturday game in Chico at noon. The doubleheader will be played in Rohnert Park on Sunday beginning at noon.
