SAN FRANCISCO - Krystal Shaw recorded a season-high ten strikeouts and allowed just two hits in a complete-game shutout as Chico State beat San Francisco State 2-0 in the opening game of a rescheduled CCAA doubleheader. The Wildcats dropped the nightcap 7-2 for the split.
Chico State stands at 12-17 overall, 5-11 in CCAA play. San Francisco State is now 17-13, 7-9 in conference and won three of the four games in the season series between the two teams.
In the early game, Chico State put a solo run on the board in the second inning when Kaitlyn Azevedo singled and advanced to second on an outfield error. Cooper Jackson drove in Azevedo with a RBI single to right center.
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the fifth. Christine Johnson led off the inning with an infield single and was sacrificed to second by Gwen Cox. Megan Bera doubled, her first of two hits in the game, to bring in the run. Azevedo also had two hits in the game.
Shaw (W, 7-8) had a no hitter going into the bottom of the sixth when Jordanna Freemer broke up the attempt with a single to lead off the inning.
S.F.’s Ashley Jackson (L, 7-6) pitched the complete game, giving up nine hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out seven.
In the late game, the Gators took an 1-0 lead on a bases loaded walk in the first inning. In the third, the Wildcats tied the score when Gwen Cox scored on an error by the Gators after reaching base on a two-out triple.
SF State retook the lead with a two-run fourth keyed by a two-RBI single by Freemer to give the Gators a 3-1 lead.
Chico State cut the Gator lead in half when Jackson drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Chelsea Lundberg.
SF State then broke the game open with a four-run sixth, capped by a three-run home run by Lea Cardenas, her fifth of the season.
Kendra Wood (W, 7-1) pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up seven hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out three and walking two. Ashley Jackson picked up the save.
Lauren Walker (L, 5-6) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts in three and one-third innings. Laura Stokes pitched the final two and two-thirds, giving up four runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
