PHOENIX - The Chico State baseball team took advantage of a two-out error in the third inning to post six unearned runs on the board en route to a 13-7 win over Grand Canyon University on Friday night in Brazell Stadium.
With two out and two on in the third, Josh Meagher reached on an error by the second baseman and the Wildcats strung together five straight hits to take advantage of the prolonged inning. Nick Victor drove in two runs with a double, Cody Dee doubled to score Victor. Nick Dingman reached on a hit. Joey Burke drove in Dee with a single and Kyle Eveland plated Dingman with a single.
The Wildcats didn’t stop there, adding three more unearned runs in the fourth, highlighted by Cody Dee’s fourth home run of the season, a two-out shot to right field.
Chico State scored solo runs in the fifth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, ending the game with 17 hits. Dee was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Burke and Meagher both went 3-for-5 and Ringer, Dingman and Eveland each had a pair of hits.
Wildcats starter Pete Mickartz worked seven innings, allowing eight hits, five runs, four of which were earned, and struck out five without walking a batter to improve to 6-1 this season.
Grand Canyon scored four runs, three earned in the fifth to cut the lead in half at 10-5 an rallied for two more runs in the eighth. GCU’s Byron Reischl led the Lopes with three hits, while Cody Fortney and Matt Fox each had two hits.
Thomas Catomer took the loss for Grand Canyon, going thee and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and nine runs, although none were earned.
The two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1pm.
