CHICO - Rebecca Johnson hit a single up the middle to drive in the winning run in extra innings to give the Chico State softball team a 3-2 win over Oregon Tech in the opening game of the Chico Mini Tournament. In the later game, CSU Monterey Bay scored all its runs in the top of the seventh for a 4-2 win against Oregon Tech.
Using the tie-breaker format in the ninth inning, the Wildcats’ Allison Smith was placed on second base to start off the bottom of the frame. She advanced to third on bunt for a base hit by Jarrett and Johnson’s hard hit ball up the middle was all the Wildcats needed.
The Wildcats improve to 10-15 overall and will face CSU Monterey Bay on Saturday at 10am. Chico State then faces Sonoma State at noon, followed by a Monterey Bay-Sonoma State match-up at 2pm. Oregon Tech falls to 8-6 after their two games today.
Oregon Tech put runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings and were able to push across an unearned run in the third and another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Sunceray Titus to take a 2-0 lead.
In contrast, the Wildcats were unable to get a runner past first base against Oregon Tech pitcher Jenni Bittle (L, 4-3) in the first four innings, but tied up the game at 2-2 with two runs on three hits in the fifth. Nicki Jarrett led off with a hit and advanced to third on Kaitlyn Azevedo’s hit to right field. The bases were loaded on a walk to Cooper Jackson and Jarrett scored on a ground ball to third. Gwen Cox drove in the second run of the inning with a base hit.
Crystal Shaw (W, 5-8) came on in relief for the Wildcats to start the fifth inning and allowed just two hits over the final four innings. The only Oregon Tech player to reach scoring position was the runner placed on second, using the tie-breaker format, to begin the ninth inning. She went to third on a sacrifice, but two infield grounders kept her there.
