CHICO - Lauren Walker pitched a gem of a complete game giving up one unearned run on four hits as the Chico State softball team took game two from CSU Monterey Bay by a score of 3-1 today at University. The Wildcats lost the early game 1-0 and ended up with a split of the CCAA four-game series.
Walker (W, 5-2) retired the Otters in order in the first inning and after giving up a hit to lead off the second, retired 12 straight through the fifth inning. Monterey Bay threatened in the sixth with runners on second and third and one out, but Walker got a ground ball to short and a strikeout to keep the Otters scoreless.
Monterey’s only run cam in the seventh. With two outs, Ashlee Trotter reached on a hard hit ball to short and an error with Kristen Rasmussen at the plate put runners at second and third. It looked like a run would score for sure on Jill Artoff’s single to center, but Rebecca Johnson hit Chelsea Lundberg with the cut off and they nailed pinch-runner Channing Peebles at the plate. The unearned run came on the next batter who delivered a hard hit out to short, but was able to bring across Rasmussen.
Chico State (9-11, 4-6 CCAA) did all the scoring it would need in the bottom of the first. Gwen Cox led off with a single and came around to score on Megan Bera’s first triple of the year. After back-to-back walks to Lundberg and Allison Smith loaded the bases, Nickie Jarrett brought in Bera on a fielder’s choice. Cooper Jackson then drove in Lundberg with a shot up the middle for the 3-0 lead.
The Otters (12-9, 7-5 CCAA) brought in pitcher Noemi Torres to replace Angela Cabral (L, 5-4), who only lasted one-third inning. Torres shut down the ‘Cats, sitting the team down in order the third through sixth innings.
In the early game, neither team got much going offensively with both teams recording just three hits apiece. For the Otters one of those hits came at the perfect time in the second inning. Marisa Trujillo walked to lead off the inning and pinch runner Katie Murray was sacrificed to second. Rachelle Morales blasted a double to left center to score Murray for the only run of the game.
The Wildcats left six runners on base, including four in scoring position, but couldn’t get the big hit to push a run across. Cox, Jarrett, and Jackson had hits for Chico State.
Krystal Shaw (L, 4-6) took the hard-luck loss, giving up the one run on three hits over seven innings. Torres (W, 5-1) picked up the complete-game shut out for the Otters.
Chico State is back in action next weekend when they host Cal State Stanislaus for a four-game series next Friday and Saturday.
