SAN FRANCISCO – The Chico State women's basketball team outscored host San Francisco State 34-11 over the final 13 minutes of a 55-46 victory Friday night at The Swamp, the home of the Gators. Chico State's stifling defense forced 11 turnovers while limiting the Gators to just 2-of-16 shooting during the fateful stretch. Meanwhile, the Wildcats made eight of their last 12 shots.
Chico State, which entered the weekend ranked No. 14 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region, improved to 18-4 overall and 11-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with its 11th win in the last 12 games. The Wildcats continue to lead the conference by one game as second-place Cal State San Bernardino held off Cal State Dominguez Hills 54-50 Friday. San Francisco State, which lost for just the second time all season at home, dipped to 10-10 overall and 7-6 in the CCAA.
Chico State's Melissa Richardson kept the Wildcats in the game by hitting all five of her 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 15 points. Audriana Spencer finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and six steals. Amanda Monteith scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds, and Renee Goldoff finished with seven points and seven boards.
Brio Rode led San Francisco State with 12 points.
The Wildcats struggled throughout the opening half, shooting just 6-for-20 and committing 12 turnovers to fall behind 27-20. And just when it looked like things couldn't get any worse, they did. The Wildcats came out of the locker room and promptly missed six shots, turned it over six times, and missed a trio of free throws. So with 13 minutes to play, they trailed 35-21 and had still not scored in the second half.
It's not as if the Chico State offense suddenly caught fire to get the Wildcats back into the game. Two Spencer layups and a Monteith free throw was all the could muster over the game's next four-plus minutes. Fortunately, San Francisco State was in the midst of a seven-plus minute scoring drought. So when Monteith scored a layup with 8:17 to go, San Francisco State's lead wa down to 35-28.
San Francisco State actually scored two buckets and made a pair of free throws over the next 1:39 to stretch its lead to 41-33 with 7:07 to play, but the Gators would not make another field goal all night.
Monteith's tip in sparked a 13-2 run over the next four minutes that gave Chico State the lead for good. Goldoff scored all seven of her points in the last 4:25, and Spencer and Natasha Smith combined to make 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
