SAN DIEGO - Krystal Shaw threw her second straight shutout in as many days and the Chico State offense rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat UC San Diego 4-0 in the first game of a CCAA doubleheader. The Tritons won the second game 6-5 with a run in extra innings to keep the four-game series even at two games a piece.
In the opener, in the top of the ninth with one out, Chelsea Lundberg reached on a error by the left fielder and Allison Smith followed that up with a double to left center to drive in Lundberg for the one-run lead. The Wildcats didn’t stop there adding three more insurance runs. Nickie Jarrett was hit by a pitch and Cooper Jackson recorded an infield single to load the bases. Pinch hitter Kaitlyn Azevedo plated one of the runners with a sacrifice to right field and Christina Wieck cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to give the Wildcats the 4-0 lead.
Shaw (2-2) allowed just four hits in her nine innings and was the beneficiary of solid defensive play behind her. Of the ten runners Shaw allowed on base, due to four walks and two hit batters, three were thrown out trying to steal by Wildcat catcher Christina Wieck and four others never advanced to second due to heads up play by the infield.
The Tritons (6-2, 2-2 CCAA) had runners in scoring position in the second, fourth, and sixth, and ninth innings, but all threats were stopped by ground balls to the infield. In fact, Shaw gave up just one fly ball out of the infield in the game.
The Wildcats (3-5, 2-2 CCAA) tallied five hits in the game, four in the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Kathy Domanycic recorded the team’s only other hit, a single in the eighth inning, and advanced to second on a sacrifice, but a pop up to second base ended the inning.
What the Tritons couldn’t to in the first game, they quickly did in the second, putting two runs on the board in the second and solo runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats answered back with three runs in the sixth. Gwen Cox led off with a single up the middle, but was erased at second on a ground ball to second. Two walks later, issued to Lundberg and Smith, and the Wildcats found themselves in a one-out bases loaded situation. Jarrett connected with a big hit, driving in Rebecca Johnson and Lundberg with a double to right center. Smith then came into score when Cooper Jackson reached on a fielder’s choice.
San Diego added another run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Wildcats fought back to tie the score in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back hits by Megan Bera and Cox set the stage for a one-out double by Lundberg. Two ground ball outs left the score knotted at 4-4.
Wildcat pitcher Laura Stokes, who relieved Lauren Walker in the sixth, gave up a one-out single in the seventh, but two ground outs to second base forced the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth Domanycic reached on a one-out single and Wieck was walked, but a Triton double play ended the inning.
UCSD led off their eighth with a double by Sarah Woofter. Stokes battled for fly ball out and a ground out, but the Tritons broke through when Lauren Chastain drove a ball up the middle for the winning run.
