SEASIDE, Calif. – Missed free throws were Chico State's problem on Friday night. Saturday, a lack of opportunities from the stripe is what hurt the Wildcats men's basketball team. Chico State was whistled for 24 fouls Saturday, while host Cal State Monterey Bay was called for only 10. As a result, the Otters shot 28 free throws compared to Chico State's six and used that advantage to win 79-67.
The Otters, who awere 24-of-28, improved to 8-12 overall and 7-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with their sixth win in a row. Chico State was 4-of-6 from the line in dropping its 11th straight game to fall to 5-16 overall and 1-13 in the CCAA.
Jesse Soto scored a game-high 18 points in 23 minutes off the bench to lead the Wildcats. The junior transfer from College of the Sequoias also pulled down four rebounds, dished out three assists, blocked a shot, and collected a steal. Frank Igbekoyi chipped in 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Darroll Phillips scored 13 points. And Rod Hawkins led the team with eight rebounds while also dishing out a trio of assists.
