SAN DIEGO - Freshman Krystal Shaw pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout to give the Chico State softball team a 1-0 win over UC San Diego in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams. The Tritons won the late game 2-0 for the split.
Shaw (1-2) struck out six and walked six over the seven innings. The Tritons threatened with runners in scoring position in five of the innings, but the Wildcat defense held strong to preserve the shutout.
Chico’s run came in the fourth inning when centerfielder Rebecca Johnson ripped a one-out double. After a strikeout for the second out, Allison Smith came up with the big hit, a double to right center to score Johnson.
The Wildcats (2-4, 1-1 CCAA) tallied five hits in the game. Gwen Cox led off the game with a single up the middle and Chelsea Lundberg and Nickie Jarrett both singled in the sixth inning.
The loss was the first for the Tritons (5-1, 1-1 CCAA) this season.
In the second game, Chico’s other freshman hurler Lauren Walker (1-1) retired the Tritons in order the first three innings before giving up a lead-off hit in the bottom of the fourth, That runner advanced to third on a sacrifice and a stolen base, but a line drive and a grounder, both to Lundberg at first base got the ‘Cats out of the threat.
San Diego finally broke through in the sixth, rallying for two runs on three hits. The Tritons led off the inning with a hit and scored the runner on a follow-up double. After a sacrifice and a walk, the second run was scored on a base hit up the middle.
Chico State managed just three hits in the game, a lead-off single in the third by designated player Kathy Domanycic, and a one-out single by catcher Christina Wieck in the fifth. Jarrett delivered a one-out single in the top of the sixth to load the bases, but a fly ball to right and a pop up to short ended the opportunity.
The two teams complete the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon.
