CHICO - Chelsea Lundberg drove in two runs in the bottom of the third inning and the Wildcats held on to win the second game of a CCAA softball doubleheader, 2-1, against CSU Monterey Bay. The Otters won the early game 7-6 with a run in the eighth inning after Chico State tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
In the third inning of the late game Chico State (8-10, 3-5 CCAA) scored the only two runs it would need in the game. Rebecca Johnson reached on a one-out single , stole second and one out later Megan Bera reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Lundberg did the damage, knocking in both runners to record her team-high 11th and 12th RBI of the season.
Monterey Bay (11-8, 6-4 CCAA) scored in the fifth on a double steal play. With one out and runners at the corners, Casey Kaufman scored from third when the Wildcats threw down to second. The Otters advanced another runner to third, but Chico State ended the threat with a ground ball to first base.
Lauren Walker (W, 4-3) went the distance, allowing one run on four hits, and struck out one. The Wildcats had five hits in the game, none for extra bases.
Angela Cabral took the loss for the Otters, dropping to 5-3 this season. She struck out three and walked three. Leadoff hitter Kaufman had two of Monterey Bay’s four hits.
In the early game, the Otters jumped on starter Krystal Shaw (L, 4-5) in the first inning, stringing together four one-out hits to score two quick runs, Ashlee Trotter and Alexis Villarin each recorded an RBI in the frame.
In the bottom of the first, Megan Cox led off with a single to left and stole second. Lundberg then doubled down the line to cut the Otter lead in half, 2-1.
Monetery Bay pulled ahead again in the third, putting two more runs on the board on a two-out, two-run single by catcher Jill Artoff.
Chico again answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning., Cox led off with a double to left and advanced on Lundberg’s single. Allison Smith’s sacrifice fly to right scored Cox .
In the sixth Monterey Bay added a solo run, hoping to put the game out of reach with a 5-2 lead, but Chico State rallied for three runs on five back-to-back, two-out hits in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up and force extra innings. Megan Bera drove in a run and Smith plated two more to give her three RBI in the game. The Wildcats had the bases loaded, but a ground ball to short ended the threat.
The Otters went ahead in the eighth on an unearned run. With a runner on first Marisa Trujillo laid down a bunt and was hit by the throwing attempt to get her at first base. The ball bounced into foul territory resulting in pinch runner Jennifer Farmer scoring from first.
Krystal Shaw (L, 4-5) gave up 11 hits in the game, struck out three and walked one. Cox had three hits and scored three times, Lundberg added three hits and an RBI, and Nickie Jarrett and Bera each had two hits.
Noemi Torres started the game for the Otters and gave up two runs on five hits. Jessica Boyle (W, 2-4) gave up three runs in two innings, but recorded the win when her team took the lead in the eighth. Torres reentered to pitch the bottom of the eighth and pick up her first save of the season.
The same two teams are back in action tomorrow night to conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
