CHICO, Calif. – The Humboldt State men’s basketball team shot 60 percent for the second night in a row to beat host Chico State 93-71 Saturday night at Acker Gym. Will Sheufelt (25 points on 9-of-12 shooting) and Devin Peal (20 points on 9-of-12 shooting) helped the Lumberjacks withstand Darroll Phillips’ 28-point effort for the Wildcats.
Chico State fell to 6-19 overall and 2-16 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with the loss. The Wildcats wrap up their 2007-08 with home games against Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills next Thursday and Friday, respectively. A pair of true freshman joined Phillips in giving the Chico State faithful something to look forward to. Josh Jackson scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed four steals. Rod Hawkins, meanwhile, chipped in a season-high 12 points.
Peal chipped in a game-high 10 rebounds for Humboldt State, which improved to 18-7 overall and 13-5 in the CCAA. Grayson Moyer notched 18 points, eight assists, and three steals. The Lumberjacks will host Cal State San Bernardino Thursday night with a chance to move into a tie with the Coyotes for first place atop the CCAA standings.
Hawkins, Jackson, and Jesse Soto keyed a 10-3 run for Chico State that got the Wildcats back into the game at 68-60 with just over 10 minutes to play. Hawkins started the run with a 3-pointer, Jackson notched a steal and a layup, and Soto capped the run with a jumper. Humboldt State responded with a 13-0 run, however, and won going away.
