CHICO, Calif. – Ben Washington led four Sonoma State players in double-figures as the Seawolves kept their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament hopes alive with a 90-71 victory at Chico State Friday night. It was the highest scoring night of the season for Sonoma State, which shot 50 percent from the field and made 28-of-31 free throws.
Darroll Phillips scored 15 points to pace Chico State, but the Wildcats turned the ball over 20 times in falling to 6-18 overall and 2-15 in the CCAA. Frank Igbekoyi finished with 14 points, while Andrew Ferrin netted a career-high 12 points.
Chico State led the Seawolves (10-13, 6-11 CCAA) 21-12 seven minutes into the game. But Keith Garner came off the bench for Sonoma State to ignite a 10-3 run that tied the game at 24-24. The lead changed hands six times between the late stages of the first half and the early stages of the second half before the Seawolves took the game over with an 11-0 run. Washington scored six points during the five-minute span in which Sonoma State turned a tie game into a 59-48 lead.
Chico State cut the advantage to four with 12 minutes to play, but Sonoma State answered with a 13-2 run that put the game out of reach.
Steve Cornett finished with 17 points and seven rebounds for Sonoma State, which heads into Saturday night’s action two games behind Cal State L.A. with three to play in the race for the final CCAA Championship Tournament berth. Mike Nelson chipped in 14 points, and Kyle Shandera scored 10.
