TURLOCK - Nickie Jarrett and Kathy Domanycic each delivered RBI-singles in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Wildcats their first win of the 2008 season, beating Grand Canyon 5-3 in Chico State’s second game of the Best of the West Invitational in Turlock. The Wildcats lost their opener against CSU Monterey Bay 3-1.
Against Grand Canyon, Chico State took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, putting together four hits, including RBI singles by Allison Smith and Jarrett.
Grand Canyon answered back with three runs in the top of the seventh, but the ‘Cats opened the bottom of the final frame with Rebecca Johnson’s third hit of the game. She advanced on an error, which allowed Smith to reach base, and scored on Jarrett’s third hit of the game. Cooper Jackson then walked to load the bases and Domanycic delivered the final blow, a walk-off single to left for the win.
Chico State out hit Grand Canyon 10-9 and won the game behind the pitching of freshman Lauren Walker, who picked up her first win in a Wildcat uniform. Walker allowed four runs on nine hits, while striking out five and walking four.
In the Wildcats’ early game against Monterey Bay, Chico State again out hit its opponent, this time 9-6, but it wasn’t enough for the win.
The ‘Cats opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Jackson led off the inning with a double to right center and scored on Megan Bera’s single to right field.
But the lead didn’t hold up, as the Otters scored one in the fourth and two in the sixth. Monterey Bay took advantage of a walk, sacrifice bunt, and a single on back-to-back plays in the fourth. In the sixth, the Otters led off the frame with a triple and an RBI single and one batter later, doubled in the second run.
Krystal Shaw gave up the three runs on four hits in her six innings of work, striking out and walking two in the process.
Jarrett ended the day with four hits and three RBI, Johnson tallied five hits and scored, and Smith scored twice.
Play continues on Saturday when the Wildcats take on Davis and Elkins at 10 a.m., followed by Humboldt State at 2:45.
