PHOENIX - The Chico State softball team took advantage of a shaky Qunicy University defense to spread out six unearned runs over the games and pitcher Lauren Walker allowed just one run in a 6-1 win at the Schutt Leadoff Classic.
Gwen Cox led off the game with a single and went to second on a pass ball. Chelsea Lundberg singled to move Cox to third and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Allison Smith.
Quincy recorded two quick outs in the third, but an error allowed Rebecca Johnson to reach base. She stole second and after Lundberg walked, Johnson scored on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed Smith to reach base. Nickie Jarret drove in Lundberg and Smith with a single to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.
In the sixth, a walk and another infield error allowed Bera and Christine Johnson on base to lead off the inning. Two ground outs later, Lundberg drove in both with her third hit of the game.
Walker (W, 3-1) gave up just one run, a homer in the sixth, on seven hits. She struck out four and walked two.
