POMONA – Coming off one of the biggest upsets of the CCAA season in last night’s win over Cal State San Bernardino, the Chico State men’s basketball team couldn’t keep pace with Cal Poly Pomona, losing 72-49 at Kellogg Gym.
Chico State falls to 6-17 overall, 2-14 in CCAA play. Cal Poly Pomona is now 10-11 overall, 9-7 in conference.
The Broncos held Chico State scoreless through almost the first eight minutes of the game, before Darroll Phillips connected on a three pointer to cut the lead to 9-3. Despite shooting just 18 percent from the floor in the first half, the ‘Cats trailed by just nine points at the half, 26-17.
Chico State opened the second half with a three pointer by Andrew Ferrin and jumper by Ryan Smith to cut the lead to four points just one minute in and later shaved it down to three points on Jesse Soto’s three pointer at the 16:19 mark.
The Wildcats fell back again, but Josh Jackson hit a jumper with 12:13 to pull the Wildcats within six points, 39-33, but over the next five-plus minutes, the Broncos put together a 21-5 run to take a commanding 60-38 lead.
Justin Argenal led the Wildcats with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Phillips, who leads the team with a 16.2 scoring average, finished with just eight points, breaking his streak of 15 straight games in double figures.
Larry Gordon led Pomona with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Angelo Tsagarakis added 16 points and Donnelle Booker 13.
Chico State is back at home next weekend, taking on Sonoma State on Friday and Humboldt State on Saturday.
