SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. The last-place Chico State men's basketball team shocked first-place and 18th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino 63-60 Friday night in what has to be counted as one of the biggest upsets in the history of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Wildcats, who handed the Coyotes just their 10th home loss in the last 10 seasons, entered the game on an 11-game losing streak, the third longest in Chico State history.

Darroll Phillips buried four early 3-pointers to make it clear the Wildcats would not be a pushover and finished with a game-high 19 points. Justin Argenal assisted on 12 of Chico State's 21 baskets. Andrew Ferrin and Frank Igbekoyi scored nine points apiece, and Ferrin notched six steals. Ryan Smith finished with eight points, including a 3-pointer with 4:47 to play that gave Chico State the lead for good.

The Wildcats improved to 6-16 overall and 2-13 in the CCAA with the win. Cal State San Bernardino fell to 18-5 overall and 11-4 in conference action.

Chico State led for much of the game, but San Bernardino scored on back-to-back trips to take a 54-51 lead with 8:34 to play. The lead changed hands over the next four minutes before Smith's second 3-pointer gave Chico State the lead for good, 58-56.

Phillips' 5th 3-pointer of the night came with 1:50 to play and stretched the lead to 61-57. That proved to be important as Lance Ortiz answered with a 3-pointer to trim the lead back to one with just over a minute remaining. Ferrin sank a pair of free throws on Chico State's next possession, and then Marlon Pearce missed 3-pointers on San Bernardino's final two possessions.

Phillips made both of his free throws Friday to increase his CCAA-record to 40 straight without a miss. He also has now made 67 3-pointers this season, the ninth most in Chico State single-season history.
