PHOENIX - Cooper Jackson blasted a double, a triple to drive in two runs, and scored twice in the Wildcats 6-0 win over Fort Hays in the opening round of bracket play at the Schutt Leadoff Classic. Krystal Shaw recorded her third shut out of the season allowing just three hits and striking out nine.
Shaw (W, 4-3) had no problem handling the Tigers, sitting down the first six she faced. Only one runner in the game advanced past second base, as Shaw faced just four batters over the minimum. As has been Shaw's style, all 12 outs recorded (along with her nine strikeouts) were ground balls to the infield.
The Wildcats (6-6 overall) benefited from two unearned runs in the second inning with Kaitlyn Azevedo driving in a run with a double, followed up by Megan Bera's RBI single.
Jackson led off the fourth with a double and came in to score on Bera's second hit of the game.
In the fifth, after back-to-back hits by Chelsea Lundberg and Allison Smith, Jackson cleared the bases with her triple and scored on Kathy DOmanycic's sacrifice fly to take a 6-0 lead.
