PHOENIX - Chico State took advantage of wild Dixie State pitching to score two runs in the bottom of the third inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats lost 4-3 to the Rebels in their first game on Friday at the Schutt Leadoff Classic.
Chico State trailed 4-1 after Dixie State blasted a three-run homer in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the frame, Dixie State walked five batters and allowed Gwen Cox and Allison Smith to score on passed balls, but managed to get out of the inning allowing just two runs.
Rebecca Johnson scored the Wildcats’ only other run in the bottom of the first inning when she singled, stole second and was driven in by Smith’s single.
Pitcher Lauren Walker came on to start the fourth and shut down Dixie State, allowing just two hits over the final four innings. Krystal Shaw (L, 4-3) pitched the first three innings and took the loss.
The Wildcats begin bracket play later this evening and into Saturday.
