Hot-hitting Wildcats beat Mesa State

CHICO, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Chico State Wildcats belted out 13 hits and held off a late-rallying Mesa State club for an 8-5 win this afternoon in Nettleton Stadium. The series between the two perennial West Region contenders wraps up with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11am.

The Wildcats (6-1) got all the scoring they would need early in the game. The ‘Cats batted around in the second inning, scoring five runs on five hits.  Phil Boscarino recorded the first RBI on a slow ball back to the pitcher, allowing Matt Bitker, who was hit by a pitch, to score from third. Kyle Eveland followed that with a double to right field to score Nick Victor, who reached on a hit of his own. Joey Burke then laid down a bunt for the perfect squeeze play to bring in Boscarino. Shane Farmer followed that up with a RBI double down the right field line and Cody Dee drove in the fifth run of the inning with a single up the middle.

In the third, Chico State picked up two more runs on a bases-loaded walk to score Bitker and an Eveland bunt to score Victor.

Bitker was one-for-one in the game, walked once, was hit by a pitch twice, and scored three times. Dee, Meagher, Victor, Boscarino, and Eveland each had two hits for the Wildcats.

Pete Mickartz (W, 3-0) kept his record perfect, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits in five and two-thirds innings. Joel Garcia pitched two and one-third, giving up two runs on two hits. Ivan Gonzales pitched the final inning for the ‘Cats, giving up one run on two hits.

Mesa State (4-5), ranked No. 24 in the latest poll, scored solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings and after the final Wildcat run in the seventh, cut the lead to 8-4 with two runs in the eighth, thanks to a Jon Evans’ double. The Mavericks managed one more run in the ninth on an RBI single by Chris Cassell.

Mesa State used five pitchers in the game, as starter Brent Lamaster (L, 0-2) was relieved in the third after giving up seven runs on seven hits.
