PHOENIX - Krystal Shaw picked up her third straight win and the Chico State softball team won its opening two games of the Schutt Leadoff Classic, a 27-team tournament taking place in Phoenix, Thursday-Saturday. The Wildcats beat Washburn University 2-1 and later knocked off Texas Woman’s University 3-2.
With the two wins, the Wildcats improve to 5-5 overall and face Dixie State tomorrow morning at 8:30am in their final game of pool play. Seeded bracket play begins Friday evening at 5pm.
Shaw (W, 3-2) pitched the complete game against Washburn, giving up one run on five hits and striking out two. Washburn’s only run came on a bases-loaded walk.
The Wildcats had just four hits in the game, but they made each one count. Nickie Jarret singled in the second inning and came around to score on Kathy Domanycic’s double. In the fourth Megan Bera singled, stole second, and came in on a Gwen Cox single.
In the 3-2 win over Texas Woman’s, Chico State jumped out early scoring a run in the first when lead-off hitter Cox singled, was sacrificed to second, reached third on a pass ball, and scored on Chelsea Lundberg’s sacrifice fly to left field.
The ‘Cats added two more runs in the third. Bera walked and went to second on Rebecca Johnson’s single. Both moved up a bag on a passed ball and Jarrett delivered the big blow, a two-run single to left field. Jarrett leads the team with eight RBI.
Lauren Walker (W, 2-1) gave up two runs on four hits and struck out one in the complete-game effort.
