CHICO, Calif. – Heath Colvin scored a career-high 27 points and the Cal State Stanislaus bench outscored host Chico State’s 31-8 to lift the Warriors to an 81-70 victory Thursday night in Acker Gym. Cal State Stanislaus, winner of its last five straight games against Chico State, snapped a six-game losing streak with the win. Chico State has now lost eight in a row.
The Wildcats fell to 5-13 overall and 1-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) despite some spirited efforts, specifically from their five starters. Senior Andrew Ferrin started for the first time in his career and notched career highs with 11 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Shane Bradley, another senior starting for the first time in his career, finished with 15 points and four rebounds. Darroll Phillips led the team with 20 points, while point guard Justin Argenal battled for a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with nine points and six assists. Ryan Smith also got a rare start and chipped in seven points.
Cal State Stanislaus (4-14, 3-8 CCAA) nabbed 12 steals and forced Chico State into 19 turnovers. Rick Cardoso finished with 15 points, J.R. Cassita scored 12, and Richard Maraker added 10. Cassita and Maraker came off the bench and played 15 and 11 minutes, respectively. Point guard Duane Jones struggled with his shot, but dished out seven seven assists while grabbing six rebounds and a trio of steals.
Chico State raced to a 9-2 lead as Phillips scored five early points, but he was forced to the bench with his second foul after being called for a blocking foul while attempting to take a charge four minutes into the game. Cal State Stanislaus took advantage with a 13-0 run that quickly changed the tenor of the game. The lead changed hands three more times in the opening half before the Warriors took the lead for good, 28-26, on Cardoso’s layup with 4:33 to go in the half.
The Warriors took a 39-30 lead into the locker room, but the Wildcats quickly cut the lead to 42-41 after Bradley scored four points to spark an 11-2 rally. Over the next five minutes, though, Maraker buried three straight 3-pointers and then Behrs made two in a row to stretch the lead to 60-51 with 9:14 left. Colvin then scored four straight points and the Wildcats could get no closer than six for the rest of the way.
Phillips made all seven of his free throw attempts, has now made 29 in a row, and is shooting 94 percent (59-for-63) from the charity stripe.
Chico State hosts UC San Diego Friday night at 8 o’clock and the Tritons will head south to Turlock to play Saturday night at 7:30.
